Lake Norman is much more than just a lake with 520 miles of shoreline, great boating, fishing, water sports and wonderful golf courses, it is also very much it's own community. This inland sea is surrounded by 4 counties and directly impacts many local towns and cities in North Carolina, including Charlotte, Huntersville, Cornelius, Davidson, Mt. Mourne, Mooresville, Troutman, Statesville, Sherrill's Ford, Denver, and Lincolnton, plus many small villages. They all have one thing in common, they consider themselves part of Lake Norman!

Created in the 1960's by the establishment of the Cowans Ford Dam on the Catawba River, the lake is named after Norman Atwater Cocke, former president of Duke Power, the company that created the lake. It was originally a haven for boaters, campers and fishermen, but since the completion of I77 from Charlotte north to Statesville, it has become a popular place for many folks to call home. Now you often find million dollar lake-front mansions built right next to small fisherman cabins, surrounded by North Carolina pine trees and hardwoods. New neighborhoods offer the amenities of comfortable suburban life, while the small towns nearby bring a quaint historic aspect to the area. Charlotte is only 20 miles south and offers big city convenience, businesses and entertainment to the mix. It is easy to understand why this community has grown so tremendously.

The area known as Lake Norman, between Charlotte and Statesville, has grown rapidly in the past 30 years since the lake was filled and I77 made commutes to Charlotte more feasible. It has become a very popular place to call home for folks from all walks of life, from retirees to professional race car drivers. Housing of all types is available. There are waterfront and water view condos, resort style golf and waterfront communities, friendly subdivisions, and quaint bustling historic downtowns. Further out you can still find a few weekend cottages tucked in the woods near the lake. Be careful if you come to visit, you just might decide to stay!
